Provision

“Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Jesus (Matthew 6:31-33)

OUT ON THE LIMB OF JESUS’ WORDS

I have preached on these words of Jesus, and have known them by heart for some time. But it hasn’t been until this time – since we have embarked on our Oxford adventures – that we as a family have felt we are really learning what they mean.

It is one thing to know what they promise notionally. It is another to know them experientially – to extend over what feels a precipice of risk with their pledge as the limb you scuttle out on.

“Unless you change and become . . .

And as we have, with some trepidation, snuck out – resigning job, selling house, picking up sticks, and venturing with young ones into a new country across the sea to take up studies we had not secured guaranteed funding for – we have found the limb of Jesus’ words as sturdy as ever.

What felt like risk is more and more being enjoyed as a great privilege. This Oxford adventure has heightened our opportunity to experience God’s intimate provision for our daily needs in a season when, for the first time in our over 15 years of marriage, it has not always been clear where next month’s rent was going to come from.

As you will see below, a Canadian studying at Oxford with a young family faces stiff financial hurdles. Aside from the challenge of being accepted academically in the first place, this financial challenge felt the most ominous – a careening Goliath straddling the path we believed God was calling us to climb.

. . . like the little children . . .”

But as you will also see below, though financial Goliaths make us shudder, they cause the Lord no quiver of hand. And he looks for those who are willing to forefront his interests in this world instead of scurrying first after their own. Julie and I certainly don’t feel we always do this faithfully. But we do feel out on a limb of faith like never before and testify with joy that God has proved faithful every day.

As you will imagine, his provision has often come through people who have believed in God’s call upon our lives in general, and along this path to Oxford in particular. And if you count yourself among that sturdy band, do see below where we have sought to provide numerous secure channels of support. We would be most grateful for any help you decided to give.

But first, celebrate with us some highlights of God’s provision thus far.

HIGHLIGHTS OF GOD’S PROVISION THUS FAR

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?”

Jesus (Matthew 6:28-30)

SOME FIGURES

Approximate Annual Budget:

26400 GBP / 45000 CAD – Annual Living Expenses (2200 GBP / 3750 CAD per month)

1000 GBP / 1700 CAD – Current monthly budget shortfall, between costs and income.

17000 GBP / 34000 CAD – Annual Oxford University and College Fees. No longer applicable, as you only pay tuition fees for the first three years of the doctorate. Andrew is now completing his fourth year, and only pays a continuation fee of 1350 GBP / year.

Praise the Lord for his rich provision of the tuition costs over the four years of the doctorate, and the prior year of master’s studies, largely through the generosity of his home church!

Current fundraising goal: To come into the black, and stay out of the red until Andrew is able to finish: 12500GBP / 30000 CAD still needed.*

INVEST YOURSELF

Henri Nouwen

“Fundraising is proclaiming what we believe in such a way that we offer other people an opportunity to participate with us in our vision and mission . . .”

“We are inviting you to invest yourself through the resources that God has given you – your energy, your prayers and your money – in this work to which God has called us . . .”

Henri. J. M. Nouwen, A Spirituality of Fundraising (Upper Room Books, 2011)

Some have preferred this option, possibly because it can offer anonymity. Most of the women serving behind the counter at our small local bank know us well, and have received contributions to “those Turnbulls studying in Oxford” before. But just in case, you may request the pertinent account number by contacting us (assuming we know you well).
